This St. Patrick’s Day Beginning Sounds Activity is a fun and simple way to help preschool and kindergarten children practice identifying beginning sounds using hands on matching. The pots of gold and shamrock letters create a playful seasonal theme while building essential early phonics skills.
This activity works well in literacy centers, small groups, or independent practice, and it also includes a worksheet version so children can record their answers.
What’s Included in the St. Patrick’s Day Beginning Sounds Activity
This printable includes:
- Pots of gold picture cards
- Shamrock letter cards
- Beginning sounds recording worksheet
- Color and blackline options
The picture cards include familiar objects such as astronaut, butterfly, cup, dice, envelope, and fan to help children connect sounds with real words.

How to Use the St. Patrick’s Day Beginning Sounds Activity
Children look at the picture on the pot of gold, say the word aloud, and identify the beginning sound. They then match the correct shamrock letter to the pot of gold.
This hands on matching helps children focus on hearing sounds before writing letters.

Use the Worksheet for Additional Practice
After completing the matching activity, children can complete the worksheet by writing the beginning sounds on the shamrocks. This helps reinforce the connection between sounds and letters.
You can also place the worksheet in a plastic sleeve and use dry erase markers so children can reuse it multiple times.

More Ways to Use the St. Patrick’s Day Beginning Sounds Activity
One of the best things about this activity is how easy it is to adapt using materials you already have.
Use letter tiles
Children can place plastic or wooden letter tiles on the shamrocks instead of writing the letters. This allows them to focus on identifying sounds first. After checking their answers, they can write the letters on the worksheet.
Use clothespins
Attach shamrock letters using clothespins to add a fine motor component. This makes the activity more engaging and helps strengthen hand muscles needed for writing.
Use alphabet stamps
Children can stamp the correct letter on the shamrock instead of writing it. This is especially helpful for children who are still developing writing confidence.
Use magnetic or foam letters
Magnetic letters work well on trays or magnetic boards. Foam letters can also be placed directly on the shamrocks.
Use dry erase markers
Laminate the worksheet or place it in a plastic sleeve so children can write and erase the letters.
Storage Tip for Easy Center Use
Store the pots of gold and shamrock letters in a small container so everything stays organized and ready to use.

This St. Patrick’s Day Beginning Sounds Activity helps children:
- Identify beginning sounds
- Connect sounds with letters

Thank you so much! This is such a cute activity and I can’t wait to do it with my son.
You are most welcome, Jennie. I hope your son enjoys the activity 🙂
Did you do the cutting with scissors? That’s a lot of rounded edges. Lol! I’m not sure I’m that good! These are SO cute, and I’d love to use them, though! Thank you!
Jess, I did do all the cutting – I’ve been told I’m quite good with a scissors :P! There are quite a few round edges, but I think that different shapes (rather than just squares) make an activity unique and keep the kinesthestic learners more engaged 🙂
Thank you.
