How to Prepare the Flip Books
Each flip book prints on one page, with its recording sheet printed separately. You’ll need scissors, a stapler or glue, and crayons or markers if you choose the black and white version.
- Print your chosen booklet. Use the color version for a ready to assemble book or let children color the black and white pictures. For the color word booklets, encourage children to match their coloring to the printed words.
- Cut out the large top rectangle. Keep the whole rectangle intact, including the sentence and picture. This forms the base of the flip book.
- Cut out the bottom rectangle. Separate its four smaller picture flaps along the dotted lines.
- Stack the picture flaps. Place them over the picture section of the base, with all the pictures and words facing the same way.
- Attach the flaps at the top. Staple or glue them along the marked strip so children can lift each flap to reveal the next picture.
Prepare the cutting and stapling in advance for children who need help, or include these steps as part of a supervised classroom activity.
Reading the Fall Flip Books Together
Begin by introducing the focus sight word. Look at its letters, discuss the sounds and spelling, and help children find it in the sentence.
Next, explore the booklet’s vocabulary. Talk about the pictures and explain unfamiliar words, such as “hedgehog” or “scarecrow.” Encourage children to use the letter and sound patterns they know when reading, and provide help with words they cannot yet read independently.
Model reading a complete sentence while pointing to each word. Then turn a flap and read the new sentence together. Draw attention to the word that changed and the words that stayed the same.
Once children are familiar with the booklet, invite them to reread it with a partner, an adult, or a small group. Keep the focus on reading the printed words accurately before encouraging a smoother reading pace.
Completing the Sight Word Recording Sheets
Each booklet has a matching worksheet. Children begin by tracing the focus sight word, then choose and write four sentences from their flip book.
They can keep the booklet beside them as a reference. Encourage them to notice the capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, and the period at the end of each sentence.
Children who need additional support can begin with one sentence and work toward completing the remaining lines. For an extra challenge, invite confident writers to create a new sentence using the focus word on a separate sheet of paper.
