This Moses and the Burning Bush Preschool Bible Lesson helps young children learn how God called Moses, gave him an important job, and promised to be with him.
The story continues after Moses grew up in Pharaoh’s palace. Years later, while caring for sheep in Midian, Moses saw something surprising: a bush was on fire, but it did not burn up.
Through a printable storybook, review pictures, movable retelling props, a helping activity, and a tissue paper craft, children discover what God said to Moses and how He promised to help him.
The lesson truth is:
God promised to be with Moses.

Connecting Baby Moses to the Burning Bush Story
Begin with a short review of the Baby Moses Preschool Bible Lesson.

Display the Three Promises to Abraham poster and remind children that God promised Abraham a big family, land for his family, and a special blessing for all families.
Five review pictures then help children remember the Israelites living in Egypt and the beginning of Moses’ story.
The pictures revisit Moses’ mother placing him in a basket, Miriam watching nearby, and Pharaoh’s daughter finding him. Children also remember that Moses’ own mother cared for him before bringing him to live with Pharaoh’s daughter.
Say together:
God watched over Baby Moses.
This review connects the previous lesson to the next part of Moses’ life. The baby God watched over had grown up, and God had an important job for him.

Reading the Moses and the Burning Bush Story
The printable storybook introduces events from Exodus 2–4 through clear illustrations and simple language.
After leaving Egypt, Moses lived in Midian and became a shepherd. One day, while looking after the sheep, he saw a bush covered in flames. The bush was burning, but it was not being burned up.
When Moses went closer, God called to him from the bush.
God told Moses to take off his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. He had seen the suffering of the Israelites in Egypt and was sending Moses to lead them out.
Moses felt afraid and wondered how he could do such an important job. God answered:
“I will be with you.”
God also showed Moses a sign by turning his staff into a snake and then back into a staff. When Moses worried about speaking, God promised to help him and said that his brother Aaron would help too.
After reading, ask:
- What was surprising about the burning bush?
- Who spoke to Moses from the bush?
- What did God tell Moses to take off?
- What job did God give Moses?
- What did God promise Moses?
- Who would help Moses speak?
Finish by repeating the lesson truth together:
God promised to be with Moses.

Moses and the Burning Bush Retelling Activity
The retelling activity gives children an opportunity to participate in the story using movable pictures and simple actions.
Prepare the Moses, staff, sheep, bush, flames, snake, and Aaron pieces. Make two small brown play dough sandals and place them on a mat beside the display.
Begin with Moses looking after the sheep. Add the bush and place the flames behind it.
As you retell the story, invite children to join in:
- Say “Here I am!” when God calls Moses.
- Move the play dough sandals aside when God tells Moses to take them off.
- Pretend to remove their own sandals.
- Briefly cover their faces as Moses did.
- Watch as the staff picture is replaced with the snake and then changed back again.
Show Aaron’s picture when explaining that he would help Moses speak.
Finally, move Moses and his staff away from the bush to show him beginning the journey back to Egypt.
Ask:
“Who would be with Moses?”
The children can answer, “God!”
The movable pieces and actions help preschoolers follow the events while hearing the same reassuring truth throughout the activity.

Asking for Help Class Activity
The Asking for Help activity connects Moses’ worries about his important job with familiar situations from children’s everyday lives.
Display the two headings:
- I Need Help
- Someone Helps Me
The eight picture pieces form four matching pairs. They show children needing and receiving help with:
- Zipping a jacket
- Opening a lunchbox
- Completing a puzzle
- Putting toys away
Begin with a picture of a child who needs help. Place it under “I Need Help” and ask:
“What is this child trying to do? What help does the child need?”
Invite a child to find the matching helping picture and place it under “Someone Helps Me.”
Talk about who is helping and what they are doing.
Then practice asking:
“Can you help me, please?”
Children can suggest people they could ask for help at home or preschool. They can also talk about ways they could help a friend.
Return to Moses’ story. Moses felt worried, but God promised to be with him and help him speak. Aaron would help too. Moses did not have to do the job alone.

Burning Bush Craft for Preschool
The burning bush craft gives children a colorful reminder of the story and its main truth.
Each child needs the printable craft template, green and brown crayons, glue, and small squares of red, orange, and yellow tissue paper.
Children begin by coloring the bush green and the trunk brown.
Next, demonstrate how to scrunch a tissue paper square into a small ball. Children glue the tissue paper onto the flame shapes, combining the three colors to create the fire.
The finished craft reads:
God Promised To Be With Moses.
While children work, talk about what made this bush special. It was on fire, but it did not burn up. God spoke to Moses from the bush and gave him an important job.
Scrunching and gluing the tissue paper also gives children practice using their fingers to handle small materials.

Reviewing the Bible Truth
Bring the children together for a short closing review.
Ask:
- What did God speak to Moses from?
- Who would help Moses speak?
- What did God promise Moses?
Repeat together:
God promised to be with Moses.
Close with a prayer thanking God for being with Moses and helping him. Ask God to help the children trust Him, ask for help when they need it, and help others too.
